Aging Skin

Skin Care and Treatments at Any Age

Understanding and treating aging of the skin is an important focus of our work at Dermal Skin Laser Centre. As skin care specialists, we understand how the aging process effects your skin and can make you look years older than you feel. We can recommend the best skin care approach for aging skin along with the most suitable anti-aging procedures and most advanced, medical-grade products to protect your skin and meet all of your skin’s needs. The visible signs of aging cannot be fully avoided, but they can be dramatically minimized. As far as the skin is concerned there are two types of aging – intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic aging involves the inevitable: as we grow older, our skin naturally becomes thinner and drier. Like any material, collagen is subject to wear and tear: it slowly breaks down over time. Unfortunately, as we age the skin’s ability to replace damaged collagen diminishes and more gaps and irregularities develop in our collagen. Diminished amounts of collagen make the skin less elastic. What used to bounce back begins to sag and become static, and deep wrinkles may begin to appear.

The rate of these events is genetically determined for each person; the process first becomes noticeable between the ages of 30 and 35.

Thus, a comprehensive approach to wrinkle prevention and elimination involves reducing collagen breakdown and increasing its supply.

Extrinsic aging of the skin results from exposure to the environment. Extrinsic aging is the critical element in determining who looks older or younger than their biological age. Exposure to sunlight is the key contributor to extrinsic aging. Photo-aging occurs when elastin and collagen breakdown and are not replaced, causing fine lines and wrinkles to intensify on the skin’s surface. Photo-aging also causes changes in the skin’s pigmentation, which can lead to the development of age spots (sun-induced freckles) and uneven skin tone, spider veins and dilated capillaries, all of which are signs of photo-aged skin.

Many factors that contribute to collagen breakdown can be fully or partially neutralized. They include sun damage, free radicals, some age-related hormonal changes, and smoking. A comprehensive approach to wrinkle prevention and elimination involves reducing collagen breakdown and increasing its supply. Here, we offer you the ABC’s of anti-aging skin:

A is for Vitamin – A (Retinol) is great for increasing the skin’s thickness and repairing collagen tissue in the skin’s Dermis, (the inner layer of the skin). Retinols will exfoliate, correct and stimulate collagen production.

Stimulating collagen synthesis in aging skin has been shown to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. Also, the benefit of stimulating your own collagen production is that collagen is deposited in an orderly, structured manner.

Vitamin A retinol help reduce fine lines, skin texture, pigmentation and elasticity. Regular use of this anti-wrinkle serum will reveal smoother, healthier looking skin. To achieve optimal results, we recommend applying a retinol at bedtime. We recommend AlumierMD Retinol in strengths of .25, .50 and 1% for  Vitamin A Retinol.

B is for Block – The use of a medical-grade mineral sunscreen on a daily basis is one of the most effective and easiest anti-aging steps you can take. Using medial-grade sunscreens will prevent sun damage safely and provide UVA and UVB protection. We recommend Elta MD SPF 40 or higher and Colorscience for the optimal sun protection of your skin.

C is for Vitamin C– One of nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants is Vitamin C. It provides the maximum antioxidant protection against premature aging and environmental factors such as pollution.

Vitamin C can accelerate collagen synthesis especially when other key ingredients are also in abundance.

Vitamin C lightens and brightens skin, reduces inflammation and decreases trans-epidermal water loss, and helps to improve and maintain an even skin tone. For optimal results, it should be applied daily under a moisturizer. We recommend AlumierMD Vitamin C.

At Dermal Skin we have sourced the high-quality, medical-grade skin care products and offer advice on achieving the correct balance of these products for each individual’s skin type and lifestyle. We work with our clients to develop skin care plans that deliver high quality results.

In addition to using the ABC’s of anti-aging protection, we offer the most advanced anti-aging treatments, including radio frequency microneedling for acne scars, pore reduction, improved skin texture and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion works to reduce fine lines, remove dead cells and exfoliate the skin; chemical peels to rejuvenate the skin; photo rejuvenation to stimulate and rebuild collagen, remove pigmentation and diminish unsightly vessels. For smoothing away lines and wrinkles we offer Botox/Neuromodulators.
